Introduction. The need for leaders that has formed in society raises the question of specifically designed training in higher education, which entails the development of a special technology for the development of leadership qualities and skills of university students.
Materials and methods. The research methods are the analysis of normative documents and scientific literature, as well as the systematization and generalization of the authors' own pedagogical experience and the results of the application of the technology they developed for conducting debates in the process of learning a foreign language.
Results. The technology of applying debates in the process of teaching a foreign language at a university is presented, which includes a description of its methodological stages, the functions of each stage in leadership development, and the content of the activities of the teacher and students.
Discussion. In the framework of the discussion of the results of the experiment, comparative indicators of the results of students' self-assessment before and after experimental training are indicated.
Conclusion. The conclusion is drawn about the effectiveness of the application of technology for conducting debates in the process of foreign language education in order to develop the leadership competence of university students while learning a foreign language.

The analysis of the theoretical foundations of leadership formation in a university allows us to substantiate the idea of developing leadership competence in the process of language education;

The technology for conducting debates in a foreign language is
effective in order to develop the leadership competence of university students.
